Nanyang Technological University – Director, Earth Observatory of Singapore
REF: 7879
In just over three decades, Nanyang Technological University (NTU) has emerged as a leading research-intensive university of the 21st century, advancing knowledge to address some of humanity’s most pressing challenges. The Earth Observatory of Singapore (EOS), one of NTU’s autonomous research institutes, is internationally recognised as a centre of excellence in Earth system science.
EOS hosts state-of-the-art analytical facilities for petrological and geochemical research, alongside a network of seismic monitoring systems and field installations across Southeast Asia. Located in one of the world’s most geologically and climatologically dynamic regions, EOS plays a critical role in advancing scientific understanding of geohazards—including earthquakes, tsunamis, volcanic activity—and the impacts of climate change. With its focus on Southeast Asia and research of global relevance, EOS contributes vital knowledge and innovation towards building safer and more resilient societies in the face of intensifying environmental risks.
As the next Director of EOS, and full professor with tenure, the responsibilities are substantive and will require a world class scholar in a relevant field with an outstanding track record in advancing research efforts that are developed and implemented in close collaboration across scientific, industry, community, and policy stakeholders involved in helping the region build resilience against natural hazards and climate change. The successful candidate will be passionate about nurturing the next generation of scientists as well as a visionary leader, with a global outlook; fluent in fostering discussions and building on the EOS’s platform for advancement and mission to drive excellence in research and intellectual leadership, they will work to diversify funding sources and to support the impact of the EOS.
