Tackling one of the biggest jobs of the energy transition

The Global Grids Modernisation Initiative (GGMI) is a critical, new and multidisciplinary effort to enable a faster and more efficient transition to secure, renewable energy. It has the backing of several of the largest global philanthropies and will work in close partnership with dozens of major clean energy civil society organisations and think tanks, consultancies and industry across the globe, in particular in emerging markets and developing countries. GGMI will catalyse coordinated philanthropic action to meet this urgent mission by removing grid infrastructure bottlenecks so that grid planning, build and operations enable a faster energy transition. By establishing a platform for philanthropic, civil society and wider stakeholder collaboration, mobilising necessary funding, supporting much-needed grid progress globally, and strengthening capacity, GGMI will form and support an unstoppable global effort.

GGMI is looking to recruit a visionary, entrepreneurial and highly collaborative individual to join as its first Executive Director to lead the initiative through its foundational phase and into long-term impact. Reporting to its Funders Advisory Committee, and in collaboration with global partners, the Executive Director will be the overall lead of GGMI, responsible for developing and delivering the initiative’s strategy, building a high-functioning team, managing grant funding, nurturing cross-sector partnerships and representing GGMI externally to funders, stakeholders, governments, industry and media. This is a rare opportunity to shape and lead a globally significant initiative from the ground up.

The successful Executive Director will be an accomplished senior leader with a strong track record of driving change, ideally within the energy transition sectors. You will bring strong knowledge of, and deep interest in, the energy sector, including the policy environment and donor funding community and the ability to maintain trusting relationships across a diverse range of stakeholders. You will thrive at the intersection of strategy, systems change, network building and implementation and have the instincts to be a responsible grant maker and mobiliser of funds. You will have the ability to synthesise complex and highly technical information into compelling strategies for philanthropic investment. You will be a natural people leader, capable of building, empowering and inspiring a high-performing team and network (across multiple countries and cultures), and a compelling communicator, able to represent GGMI with clarity and authority across multiple platforms and audiences. Above all, you will be driven by a deep commitment to reshaping the foundations of our global energy systems for a more just and sustainable future.

GGMI will be hosted by The Pooled Fund on International Energy (PIE). PIE is an international grant-making and strategy platform with a mission to secure a safe climate, clean air and prosperity through encouraging a just transition in the power and steel sectors. PIE is hosted at the European Climate Foundation.

If this sounds like you, we look forward to hearing from you. To apply, please submit a CV and covering letter

The deadline for applications is midnight BST Monday 23rd June.

The role can be based remotely, and time zones will be taken into consideration given the importance of building a start-up team. Alternative arrangements can be accommodated where necessary, and relocation can be supported if deemed necessary. The salary will vary depending on country and is commensurate with the seniority of the role.
