The KWTRP is a longstanding partnership between the Nuffield Department of Medicine at the University of Oxford, the Wellcome Trust and the Kenyan Medical Research Institute (KEMRI). It is headquartered in Kilifi on the East Coast of Kenya with offices in Nairobi. Since its formation in 1989, the programme has driven world class research into the prevention and treatment of human infectious diseases, improving the lives of people in East Africa and globally. The role of Director is pivotal to providing high quality scientific and strategic leadership in this vibrant and exciting programme.
As a senior member of the Nuffield Department of Medicine you will be part of a global community of researchers undertaking high quality, world leading research into a wide range of diseases affecting human health. The KWTRP is one of three Wellcome funded Major International Programmes supported through the Nuffield Department of Medicine. The other units are in collaboration with countries in South-East Asia and have their main centres in Thailand (MORU) and Vietnam (OUCRU).
The incoming Director will lead a centre with a compelling record of scientific achievement and a suite of cutting-edge platforms and capabilities, and which is uniquely placed to play a leading role in the continued growth of the scientific landscape in Africa and worldwide, while directly supporting the career development and training of talented African researchers.
The Director will take overall responsibility for all aspects of the Programme including developing and leading its academic strategy and managing a complex grouping of national and expatriate research staff in multiple locations. They will bring an exceptional international reputation for research in a relevant subject with a track record of significant publications and funding. They will also demonstrate experience of senior leadership in an international environment and an ability to develop multicultural, multidisciplinary and professional teams, and manage financial and budgetary controls.
