Clare Hall, Appointment of President

The Fellows of Clare Hall are seeking to elect a new President to lead the College into its seventh decade. Applications are invited from individuals of distinguished achievement in a research-intensive environment who can offer thoughtful and inspiring leadership to a self-governing, egalitarian community of researchers and scholars.

Clare Hall was founded in 1966, conceived as an institute for advanced study within the collegiate university, an open, non-hierarchical community in which academics at every stage of their careers mix freely. It is a College without undergraduates, dedicated entirely to research and postgraduate education, and uniquely distinguished by its extensive programme of Visiting Fellowships which draws leading scholars from across the world into the life of the College for periods of up to a year. The College's membership spans the sciences and arts and humanities in equal measure, and its Fellows and former Visiting Fellows have included recipients of Nobel, Crafoord, Templeton and Breakthrough prizes, among other distinctions.

The College occupies a Grade II* listed campus, designed by the Anglo-Swedish architect Ralph Erskine, set in beautiful gardens on a human scale that reflects the College's founding ethos of openness and equality. As Clare Hall marks its sixtieth anniversary, the College is embarking on a significant programme of renewal – of its estate, its support for graduate students and early-career researchers, and the long-term growth of its endowment.

The President is the head of the College and bears ultimate responsibility, under the Statutes, for the effective conduct of its academic and collegiate life, for the wellbeing of all its members, and for the stewardship of its charitable mission. The President represents the College within the University of Cambridge and to the wider world, and will play a leading role in the College's strategic development during a period of particular ambition and opportunity. Candidates should bring a record of excellence in a research-intensive environment, alongside the judgment, warmth and interpersonal skill to lead by influence and example within a community that governs itself collectively.

The role is part-time. The time commitment will be agreed with the successful candidate, at a level of up to 60% of working time, with a natural rhythm of fuller engagement during the three eight-week terms and lighter commitment in vacation periods. The role may be combined with other appropriate academic or professional responsibilities, subject to the agreement of the Governing Body.

Clare Hall is committed to equality of opportunity and to building a diverse community of fellows, students and staff. Applications are welcomed from all candidates regardless of background, and Clare Hall is particularly keen to attract candidates from groups that are currently under-represented in comparable positions. The College is an equal opportunities employer.

Informal and confidential enquiries may be directed to Harvir Bains at Harvir.Bains@perrettlaver.com.

The closing date for applications is Tuesday 15th September 2026.

Location: Cambridge.

Salary: Salary commensurate with seniority of the role and context.
