Agora Think Tanks develops evidence-based solutions to accelerate the cross-sectoral transformation of energy and industry systems worldwide. We combine rigorous analysis, stakeholder engagement and skills sharing to develop feasible policy solutions – working independently and free of economic or party-political interests. From our Bangkok office and in close cooperation with partners across the region, we support Southeast Asia’s transition to clean, affordable and secure energy systems and low carbon industries.

Together with our network of partner think tanks we combine the strengths of local expertise and international experience to provide unique counsel to decision-makers. 

Appointment of Director, Southeast Asia 

We currently operate with an interdisciplinary and international team of ~200 diverse staff based in our offices in Berlin, Brussels, Bangkok and Beijing and an annual budget of USD ~35m. At this critical time for the regional transition, Agora Think Tanks is now seeking a new outstanding Director, Southeast Asia. He/She will be responsible for Agora’s strategic leadership in the region, actively enhance Agora’s impact together with the team and in close cooperation with senior management, engage with policy-makers, donors, academia and other key stakeholders, and generally represent the organisation in Southeast Asia. 

The successful candidate will bring over 15 years of relevant professional experience, including several years in leadership roles across policy, research, or program management. He/She will demonstrate deep expertise in energy, industry and climate policy in Southeast Asia, alongside a strong understanding of the region’s political economy and decision-making processes and will have built strong networks across governments, regulators, industry and civil society, with a proven track record of developing evidence-based policy positions and engaging effectively with policymakers across the region. An inspiring and collaborative leader, he/she will motivate teams through an integrative leadership style suited to a think tank environment. Excellent communication skills are essential, including fluency in English and at least one Southeast Asian language, as well as a willingness to travel regularly across the region.

The successful applicant should ideally be based in Agora’s offices in Bangkok. Although working remotely is common at Agora, frequent travel in the region is essential, in addition to regular international travel.  

The salary will be commensurate with the seniority of the position. The position includes the ability to work in a full- or part-time capacity.
