Penicillin, X-rays, chemotherapy: all cornerstones of modern medical science, yet all discovered through serendipity. So many of our greatest advances in the biomedical sciences have arisen unexpectedly from curiosity that spanned disciplines. Sage Bionetworks operates firmly under the belief that scientific “outsiders,” who are not bound by the conventions and constraints of any one field, may work alongside experts to recombine ideas into breakthrough solutions to our most pressing health problems.

Our mission is to foster serendipitous connections in biomedical science, translating novel discoveries into improved human health through open science practices and radical collaboration. Underpinning these potential discoveries is an ever-growing mass of data that can remain unused for years. This presents a “valley of death” between basic science and meaningful clinical applications. Sage Bionetworks provides the bridge across this valley, bringing data and communities together in a way that can transform healthcare.

Bringing together scientists, engineers, technologists, and governance experts, Sage Bionetworks develops the platforms, partnerships, and communities that enable researchers to unlock insights from some of the world's most valuable biomedical data. Its work has contributed to FDA-approved AI technologies for breast cancer detection, advanced research in Alzheimer's disease, cancer, and rare diseases, and helped establish rigorous standards for evaluating artificial intelligence in biomedical science. Over the past 15 years, Sage Bionetworks has built Synapse into one of the world's leading scientific data commons, housing approximately four petabytes of biomedical data and serving more than 100,000 researchers worldwide, while developing Sage Brain, an AI-native discovery platform designed to accelerate scientific discovery through responsible, privacy-preserving AI. By making biomedical data more findable, accessible, interoperable, and reusable, Sage is breaking down barriers across science and technology to accelerate research and improve human health.

We are now seeking an accomplished, strategic, and collaborative financial leader to serve as Treasurer and a member of the Board of Directors of Sage Bionetworks. Working closely with the Board Chair, Finance Committee, CEO, COO, and Head of Finance, the Treasurer will provide governance oversight of the organization's financial health, sustainability, and long-term strategy. As a trusted advisor to the Board and executive leadership, the Treasurer will help ensure sound financial stewardship, robust risk management, and effective fiduciary oversight in support of Sage's mission to advance biomedical discovery through open science and collaboration.

The successful candidate will bring senior financial leadership experience together with deep expertise in financial governance, budgeting, audit, risk management, and strategic financial planning. They will have the ability to interpret complex financial information, provide thoughtful challenge and guidance at Board level, and ideally possess experience with federal government funding and contracts. Above all, they will demonstrate sound judgment, integrity, and a collaborative approach to governance, alongside a genuine commitment to Sage Bionetworks' mission and the opportunity to help shape the future of open, data-driven biomedical research.

To apply, please submit a CV and cover letter, detailing how you fulfil the role description and personal specification quoting reference 8573. The deadline for applications is Sunday, August 30, 2026, at 9:00am PT.
