Education shapes the lives and futures of children and young people worldwide. The National Foundation for Educational Research’s (NFER’s) mission is to improve education and outcomes for children and young people.

Our work helps strengthen education policy and practice. Drawing on extensive knowledge and expertise, we provide distinctive, accessible insights to governments, agencies and funding bodies at international, national and local levels, supported by our broad range of expertise and professional services.

We are seeking to appoint enthusiastic and committed Trustees to support our purpose of providing robust evidence to improve education. This is an exciting opportunity to support NFER and our strategic direction; as a Trustee, you will help to ensure that we deliver our charitable aims, and that we have a positive impact on children and young people through education. The new Trustees will work with the Board, the Chief Executive, Carole Willis, and the staff of NFER, all of whom have a wide range of expertise and experience, and share a strong commitment to furthering our aims.

Applicants should have a strong interest in the contribution that research and assessment can make in improving the effectiveness of education. The key qualities we are looking for are: the ability to operate at a strategic level; to offer key insights into the business; provide constructive challenge to help grow the business; and to help us think in creative and innovative ways.

We are particularly keen to hear from those with recent experience and expertise in Finance (with a focus on qualified accountants), Commercial, and Communications/PR; we are also interested to explore contributions from those with a research background or international experience, and would welcome applications from candidates with experience in these areas.

Trustees are responsible for agreeing the aims and direction of the Foundation and for ensuring it delivers the charitable outcomes for which it has been established. You would be expected to attend Board meetings four times a year and a strategy day (usually in May), and contribute to a Board Committee or working group. There is no fee, but travel and other expenses are reimbursed.
